Telefónica Demos Power of 10G PONTelefónica on Tuesday demonstrated 10G PON's ability to combine multiple services on one SDN-enabled broadband access architecture (SEBA), an approach that will dramatically reinvent how operators deliver residential, business and mobile services, deploy new offerings and address subscriber experience. The demo, conducted at this week's Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona, featured a virtualized control plane to deliver converged residential, business and mobile backhaul services. ADTRAN supplied its SDX 10G PON OLTs to aggregate multi-vendor ONTs for the demonstration and breaks down walls so Telefónica has an open, disaggregated network via the use of virtualized access software from the Open Networking Foundation (ONF). This approach liberates Telefónica from the shackles of one or two vendors in a closed, proprietary OLT and ONU environment. Instead, Telefónica can choose among the growing ranks of OLT and ONU vendors by leveraging ONF for interoperability across any environment, thereby accelerating deployment of programmable software-based service architecture and decreasing the cost to implement and maintain this infrastructure. Subscribers want speedy access to premium services -- and they want them for less money. To compete, operators must invest in innovative and flexible networks that leverage the latest broadband technologies and standards for open, multi-vendor environments. Telefónica's demo showcased the provider's fiber-to-the-home evolution and what its base of more than 30 million homes can expect. Related posts:
