National Broadband Plans Paint a Mixed Picture of EU InternetNiall Hunt, Editor, 10/24/2017
Governments must overhaul their national broadband plans to achieve the Digital Agenda for Europe (DAE) target III, Joahannes Feldmann, COO at atene Kom, told attendees at Broadband World Forum. DAE is a plan to leverage information and communication technologies to create innovation, economic growth and progress across the continent. This plan, now in its third iteration, includes high-speed access and ubiquitous coverage, a challenge for some regions. "There is a lot of work to do. Only Malta has achieved 30Mbps. The majority of member states are below 90% coverage," Feldmann said. Rural areas, in particular, are difficult to serve. It's therefore important for NBPs to take these challenges into account, he said. The good news is that uptake is high. "Most nations are showing double-digit growth. What we find is that the availability of high bandwidth encourages take up," said Feldman. Suggestions for tackling the challenges include public sector spending to reach rural areas and putting broadband infrastructure int building regulations. Regardless of other available technologies available, fiber must underpin everything, he said. "There are a lot of areas where technologies work. But without doubt, we need to get fiber closer to the customer, both in fixed and wireless infrastructures," said Feldman. Related posts:
