IEEE Issues Add-On Standard for Home, IoT Networks![]() The IEEE on Monday published an add-on to the Ethernet standard, designed to complement wired and wireless connections broadly used in networks today. The IEEE 802.3bv standard is a "family of three point-to-point physical layers for 1000 Mbit/s operation over duplex plastic optical fiber," according to the standards organization. The amendment to IEEE St. 802.3-2015 includes specifications for related management parameters. In addition, the supplement meets the requirements of automotive, industrial and home networks, delivering the advantages of fiber optic connections in setups where networks do not need a long line length, according to the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc. (IEEE) . For example, fiber optic connections are immune to electromagnetic interference and lack electrical contact between connected blocks. "The ongoing expansive growth of Ethernet is driving a requirement for connectivity options that align with industry requirements, and that provide the best suited transmission medium and operational speed to meet these specific industry Ethernet application requirements," said Bob Grow, chair of the IEEE P802.3bv Gigabit Ethernet Over Plastic Optical Fiber Task Force, in a statement.
